- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- ยฝ teaspoon salt
- ยฝ teaspoon pepper
- 1 oz onion soup mix
- 2 cups uncooked orzo pasta
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or Swiss for classic French onion flavor)
- 1 cup crispy fried onions
- Optional: fresh chopped parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350ยฐF. Grease a 9ร13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- In a large skillet, cook ground beef and diced onion over medium-high heat until beef is no longer pink. Stir in salt, pepper, and onion soup mix. Remove from heat.
- In a pot, boil orzo pasta in salted water until just al dente (about 7โ8 minutes). Drain well.
- Spread cooked orzo evenly in the baking dish. Top with the beef-onion mixture.
- Pour beef broth evenly over the layers.
- Cover tightly with foil and bake for 20 minutes.
- Remove foil. Spread sour cream over the beef mixture.
- Sprinkle mozzarella (or Swiss) cheese, then top with crispy fried onions.
- Return to oven uncovered for 10โ12 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let rest 5 minutes. Garnish with parsley if desired and serve warm.
